This Tomato variety is specific from a region in Spain called La Rioja, a region with a long rich horticultural history.
Nobody knows which is the real variety or if we are dealing with a mixed variety but this tomato has been cultivated in the region for as long as anyone can remember.
No other variety not even the RAF has the intense flavor of the Tomata and there are many people who consider this variety “The best in the World”
Some traits that make this tomato outstanding are :
- Very low acidity , which will be slightly different depending on the soil.
- Dense and Very meaty
- Size: Some specimens weigh 1-2 kg
In the region no many other varieties are grown due to the Tomata great quality and culinary value which prevents genetic contamination from other varieties.
One of the great advantages of this variety also is that is that it has not been highly commercialized yet, their huge size and very irregular shapes have not made them attractive to mass producers. This has prevented the genetic modification of the variety, and other practices such as cloning the variety to endure at least a week of transportation, modifying them to ripen slowly and harvesting them green to commercialize. These practices deteriorate the final quality and flavor of the final product.
Don’t let the opportunity pass! Plant them, look after them, harvest them and then decide if they deserve to be considered “the best tomato in the world”
